How it all started... GOD'S Home Design
In an intriguing twist to their journey, the seeds for Calvary Southport were perhaps sown much earlier than Pastor Fred Kenney, Jr. and his wife, Katie, realized. Back in 2018, Louise Cole, a close friend, shared a message from the Holy Spirit with them, that they were destined to start a church in North Carolina, with Fred at its helm as the pastor. At the time, the idea seemed far-fetched, and it was easy for them to dismiss Louise's message as just — a dream. The notion of leaving New Jersey, relocating to a new state, transporting their ministry Plays On Word Theater and embarking on the arduous task of planting a church was NOT on their radar!
Several years and twelve visits later, the narrative would ultimately unfold in a way none of them could have anticipated. The story continued in October of 2021 when Pastor Fred Kenney, Jr. and his wife, Katie, embarked on a journey from New Jersey to Southport, North Carolina. With each visit, the Kenneys felt an increasing conviction that Southport needed a Calvary Chapel, noting the nearest one was a considerable 45-minute drive away. Their dream was not just to plant a church but to foster a fellowship that reflected their deep-rooted beliefs and commitment to spreading the Gospel. In March 2024, the Kenneys found themselves steering not just towards founding a church but also expanding their beloved theater ministry, Plays On Word Theater to the south… a decision that underscored the multifaceted nature of their calling. The move to Southport, the inception of Calvary Southport in their living room, and the eventual expansion into the Southport community, at the Indian Trail Meeting Hall, all reflected a divine orchestration that mirrored Louise's vision.
This remarkable coincidence—or perhaps divine intervention—lent an additional layer of profundity to their mission. It was a stark reminder of the mysterious ways in which God communicates His plans for His people. The inception of Calvary Southport, stands as a powerful testimony to faith, the importance of community, and the belief in divine timing. Despite initial skepticism, the unfolding events have proven that God's plans are often revealed in unexpected ways, setting the stage for what is hoped to become a beacon of faith and fellowship in Southport, NC.

Expanding the vision...
Church isn’t just Sunday morning service in a building. Church is the people, the family, the community within that embraces and prays for one another more than just one day a week. As Calvary Southport grows, expanding our vision means fostering an inclusive environment where both men and women are equipped, empowered, and encouraged to fulfill their God-given purposes and potentials, and while “training a child in the way he or she should go”, providing an environment in which they too can eventually find their purposes and potentials as well. Calvary Southport will prayerfully become a haven where all embrace the unique giftings, talents, and perspectives each individual brings to the body of Christ.
Where we are headed...
Our journey is marked by simplicity, yet its strength lies in the guidance of the Spirit and the wisdom of the Word of God. We remain committed to an exhaustive exploration of the entirety of Scripture, navigating methodically through each book and verse, equipping both men and women to carry the living essence of God's Word to the lost of the Southport community and beyond….to any and all the Good Lord places in their paths. Amidst life's trials, we find resilience and mutual support in our reliance on God and our commitment to one another.
